No heat, no hot water,
or an AC acting up?

Run through a few quick checks, look up an error code, or find out how old your equipment actually is. Most of this takes two minutes, and it often saves you a call.

Smell gas, or hear a CO alarm? Skip all of this. Leave the house, get everyone out, and call 911 from outside.

Six quick checks before you call

Tap each one as you go. Any of these can be the whole problem.

Check the thermostat

Set to Heat (or Cool) and a temperature past the room's current reading? Screen blank or dim? Try fresh batteries.

Check your breaker panel

Look for a breaker labeled Furnace, AC, or HVAC sitting slightly off from the others. Switch it fully off, then back on.

Check the furnace's power switch

Most furnaces have a switch near the unit that looks like a regular wall light switch. Make sure it's flipped on.

Check the air filter

A filter clogged grey with dust can shut the whole system down as a safety precaution. Replace it if it's caked.

Check the condensate drain

High-efficiency furnaces and AC units drain condensation through a small pump or line. A clog or full pan can trip a safety switch and shut things down.

Look for a blinking light on the furnace

Most furnace control boards blink a pattern when something's wrong. You don't need to decode it — just note the pattern, or look it up in the Error Codes tab.

Look up an error code

Search by code, brand, or just describe what you're seeing.

Check how old your equipment is

The serial number tells you the manufacture date — and whether repair or replace makes more sense.

Found on the rating plate — usually on the side of a tank, or inside the furnace's front panel.

Estimates use each manufacturer's published date-code format and aren't a substitute for an on-site inspection — very old or relabeled units can decode ambiguously. We're happy to confirm in person.
